Taraba State

Taraba is a state of Nigeria, with its capital Jalingo that is with 117 766 inhabitants (2005) and largest city.

Geography

The state is located in the east of the country, bordered to the north by the states of Bauchi and Gombe, in the northwest of the Plateau State, in the south of Cameroon, on the west by the state of Nassarawa, on the southwest by the Benue State and on the east by the Adamawa State.

History

Taraba was made ​​today on August 27, 1991 from part of Gongola State of Adamawa. First administrator was between August 28th 1991 and January 1992 Adeyemi Afolahan. Governor since May 29, 1999, Jolly Nyame. Currently, since May 29, 2007 Danbaba Suntai holds the office.

Management

The state is divided into 16 Local Government Areas. These are: Ardo - Kola, Bali, Donga, Gashaka, Gassol, Ibi, Jalingo, Karim Lamido - Kumi, Lau, Sardauna, TAKUM, Uzza, Wukari, Yorro and Zing.

Economy

Agriculture is the main economic activity in Taraba. The climatic and ecological conditions allow the cultivation of cereals, coffee, tea, peanuts, cotton, corn, rice, sorghum, millet, cassava and yams.

There are sheep, goats, poultry, rabbits and pigs. Also significant is the fishing industry.
