Toyota (Aichi)

Toyota (Japanese豊 田 市, -shi) is a city located in Aichi Prefecture on Honshu, the main island of Japan.

Geography

Toyota is located east of Nagoya and north of Okazaki on the banks of the Yahagi.

History

Toyota was originally Koromo (挙 母) and bears since January 1, 1959 its present name. On 1 April 2005, Toyota joined together with six neighboring communities. The urban area of 290.11 km ² grew to 918.47 km ² and its population of 346 213 to around 406,000.

Economy

The economy is mono industrially influenced by the automotive industry, similar to Wolfsburg in Germany or Detroit in the United States. The head office and 7 of 12 Japanese works of the Toyota Motor Corporation are located in the city.

Due to the subprime crisis and its consequences for the Group Toyota of the city were missing 2009 750 million euros to the corporate tax. In addition, the city had the highest unemployment rate in the country.

Many temporary workers come from low-wage countries such as China and Brazil.
