Türnitz Alps

The Türnitzer Alps are a mountain range of the Northern Limestone Alps in Southern Lower Austria and the neighboring Styria.

Demarcation

The Türnitzer Alps extend from Erlauftal in the west to the east Traisental. In the south they are bounded by the Salzatal.

Important peaks and transitions

The group covers an area of ​​about 30 km by 30 km and forms the transition from the Alpine foothills in the Danube region to the higher peaks of the Alps Miirzsteg that already are largely in Upper Styria. The mountains reach the Grand Sulzberg 1400 m altitude, but still show other peaks over 1,350 m. More famous peaks are

  • In the field of Türnitzer Traisen ( the southwestern Central Valley ) towards Annaberg: Hohenstein and Eisenstein, Türnitzer Hoeger, Eibl and Tirolerkogel,
  • In the field of Unrechttraisen: Türnitzer Hoeger and Traisen Mountain,
  • In the south near Mariazell Bürgeralpe.

On passes and crossings are to be mentioned:

  • To the west the Pielachtaler Gscheid ( 841 m) and the Annaberg ( 976 m)
  • In the southeast, the core Hofer Gscheid ( 982 m).

Geology and features

The Türnitz and Traisen valleys are characterized by their steep valley sides, which leave little room for settlements, and have high water quality. The summits are mostly forested, only to the better-known excursion mountains as Eibl and Tirolerkogel larger areas of pastures are covered.
