United Nations Security Council Resolution 155

Resolution 155 of the UN Security Council is a resolution that was decided by the United Nations Security Council in the 892nd meeting on August 24, 1960 unanimously. They dealt with the admission of the Republic of Cyprus as a new member of the United Nations.

Background

The British colony was on 16 August 1960 on the basis of the Agreement of Zurich between Britain, Greece and Turkey ( 1959) independently; the Greek- and Turkish-speaking ethnic groups were equal. For the first President Archbishop Makarios was elected. In the Constitution, which had been largely determined by the United Kingdom, the Turkish community were granted permanent representation rights.

Content

The Security Council announced that it has reviewed the admission of the Republic of Cyprus as a new member of the United Nations and recommended to the UN General Assembly to agree to a recording.

Accession

The Republic of Cyprus joined the United Nations on 20 September 1960.
