United Nations Security Council Resolution 149

Resolution 149 of the UN Security Council is a resolution that was decided by the United Nations Security Council in the 891st meeting on August 23, 1960 unanimously. She busied herself with the inclusion of Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso) as a new member of the United Nations.

Background

During the Algerian War of Independence came again in France Charles de Gaulle to power, the 1958 Fifth Republic was born. In referendums, the colonies were able to vote on their independence. Daniel Ouezzin Coulibaly of the obervoltaischen RDA advocated a remain within the French Community, since he did not even saw the colony ripe for a full self-government. Maurice Yaméogo also spoke to the Africans the ability to independence at this time on, he said, in Upper Volta knew you " does not even produce a box of matches ." The Rassemblement Démocratique Africain obervoltaische ( RDA) was thus in contrast to the overall West African Congress, which took place in Cotonou. Gérard Kango Ouedraogo called the independence advocates as "anti - French".

With the rejected independence referendum - shortly before Ouezzin Coulibaly had died in Paris - Upper Volta was associated to an autonomous republic within the French Community with France. Upper Volta in 1959 joined the Federation of Mali, but only briefly had existed, and finally the Conseil d' entente with Niger, Dahomey and the Ivory Coast.

Kango Ouedraogo and Joseph Conombo joined the RDA during the experience of independent Guinea, which had voted in 1958 as the only colony for independence and the war of France in Algeria, the desire for independence led to growth. Guinea was present as a member of the UN on the international stage and had contracts with the United States and the Soviet Union, which has also been followed in Upper Volta with envious glance. Finally, de Gaulle declared the colonies for ripe to be granted independence and so, on 5 August 1960, the Republic of Upper Volta.
