United Nations Security Council Resolution 159

Resolution 159 of the UN Security Council is a resolution that was decided by the United Nations Security Council in the 907th meeting on September 28, 1960 unanimously. She busied herself with the inclusion of Mali as a new member of the United Nations.

Background

Mali was thereafter until the independence part of French West Africa. In elections in 1956 Modibo Keïta was the one in the Malian Territorial Assembly, win a seat in the French National Assembly on the other. Keita and his party, the U.S. RDA, then targeted towards independence. On November 24, 1958 Sudan became an autonomous republic within the French Community. On March 25, 1959, merged with Senegal to Mali Federation.

The Mali Federation gained independence on 20 June 1960. The Security Council, in Resolution 139 on June 28, 1960 to join the Federation to the United Nations. The boundary between the Entities, however, was set arbitrarily by the French colonial territory and did not respect traditions, peoples, strong relationships or Feindschaften.Dementsprechend joined Senegal on 20 August of the same year from the Federation, and was remaining on September 22, 1960 part formally independent as the Republic of Mali.

The Security Council announced that it has the recording of Mali as a potential new member of the United Nations and recommended to the UN General Assembly to agree to a recording.
