United Nations Security Council Resolution 1970

The Resolution 1970 of the UN Security Council is a resolution, adopted unanimously at its 6491st meeting, on 26 February 2011, the United Nations Security Council. The resolution, which was adopted on the basis of Article 41 in Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations and is therefore binding under international law, the Board responded to the development of the situation in Libya and imposed economic sanctions against the North African state. These include an arms embargo, a travel ban on Muammar Gaddafi and some of his family members and senior members of his government. Bank accounts of Libya and the people on the list in the annex to resolution were frozen.

The Security Council directed the Libyan authorities to cooperate with the International Criminal Court, which examined the events in the country since February 15, 2011.

With the resolution text, the members of the Security Council assume that the " widespread and systematic attacks currently taking place in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya against the civilian population may amount to crimes against humanity ".

The Security Council demanded an immediate end to the resolution of violence and steps that are suitable to fulfill " the legitimate demands of the population ". The United Nations calls on the Libyan authorities to take measures to ensure the safety of foreign nationals in Libya and which to leave to facilitate who want to leave the country. It also demands that Libya foreign humanitarian and medical aid workers concerned to enter and safely put a safe passage of relief supplies. Finally, the committee called for a lifting of restrictions on the media.
