United Nations Security Council Resolution 1969

Resolution 1969 of the UN Security Council adopted unanimously on 24 February 2011 having regard to the resolutions 1599, 1677, 1690, 1703, 1704, 1745, 1802, 1867 and 1912. It specifies the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor -Leste ( UNMIT ) for one year.

The Security Council extended the mandate of UNMIT at 1520 Uniformed 1480 police officers and 1200 civilian employees until 26 February 2012. Council called on all parties in East Timor to become involved in the political dialogue and to promote the social, democratic and economic development. UNMIT was requested to accompany the preparations for the parliamentary and presidential elections in 2012. Until then, the government should move ahead with reform of the security forces, including the National Police of East Timor.

The resolution endorses an adaptation of UNMIT to the changed situation in East Timor and the preparation of the troop withdrawal. Until the National Police of East Timor can assume full responsibility in the country, is to ensure the enforcement of law and the UNMIT mission. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki -moon was instructed in the resolution by the Security Council to monitor the situation in East Timor and to report to the Security Council on the progress.
