Uruguayan general election, 1999

The presidential and parliamentary elections in Uruguay in 1999 took place on Sunday, 31 October 1999.

There the president, the vice president, 30 senators and 99 deputies were elected.

Since no party won an absolute majority, a second ballot was held on Sunday, November 28th.

Candidates

Each party had chosen its candidate in the primaries for the presidential election in Uruguay in April 1999:

  • Partido Colorado: Jorge Batlle Ibáñez, received 32.8 % of the vote in October; in November he was the winner of the runoff election with 54.13 % of votes.
  • Frente Amplio: Tabaré Vázquez scored 40.1 % of the vote in October.

  • Nuevo Espacio Rafael Michelini
  • Unión Cívica: Luis Pieri
