Velké Žernoseky

Velké Žernoseky ( German: United Tschernosek ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic, located in the Elbe valley near the Porta Bohemica in the Bohemian Central Mountains. The place is known as a famous wine region in Bohemia.

History

Velké Žernoseky was first mentioned in 1057. In the 12th century it came into the ownership of the Cistercian monastery of Altzella at Nossen in Saxony. Since the 14th century, the cultivation of wine by the Cistercian order Velké Žernoseky is detectable. The large, still in use today cellar under the castle were built by the Cistercians. Until 1437 Velké Žernoseky remained in the hands of the monks. 1667 came the rule, including the neighboring Libochovany to the Lords of Nostic Rieneck. 1916 bought the Prague firm Oppelt the late baroque palace with the great wine cellars.

Traffic

Since 1874 passes through Velké Žernoseky the former Austrian Northwestern Railway, the railway station is Velké Žernoseky but in the corridors of the nearby Žalhostice ( Tschalositz ). On the other bank of the Elbe, to Male Žernoseky, leads a ferry.
