Volodarsk, Russia

Volodarsk (Russian Володарск ) is a town in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (Russia) with 9928 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 50 km west of Oblasthauptstadt Nizhny Novgorod on the river Seima and Saton near its confluence with the Oka, a left tributary of the Volga.

Volodarsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The village Seima the homonymous river was first mentioned in the 15th century. The name is probably Finno- Ugric origin (see Saimaa in Finland).

A former Vorwerk this village, Olgino, was renamed in 1920 in honor of the Revolutionary W. Wolodarski in Wolodary. In 1932 this place is the status of an urban-type settlement; the old village Seima and several others were incorporated.

In 1956, the city charter was granted under the present name.

In Volodarsk individual buildings have survived from the 19th century.

Economy and infrastructure

In Volodarsk as the center of an agricultural area outweigh companies in the food industry.

The town lies on the railway line opened in 1862 Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod ( station Seima; kilometer 390), on the upside today, much of the features of the Trans-Siberian railway on its western part from Moscow.

The highway M7 Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod -Kazan - Ufa (part of European route 22) heads north past the town.
