Waal is a market in the Swabian district Ostallgaeu and a member of the administrative community Buchloe.

Geography

Waal is located in the Allgäu region. In the center rises the Singold that opens in Augsburg in the Wertach. After Buchloe lies about 8 km, to Landsberg am Lech about 12 km.

History

In the year 890 Waal was first mentioned in a document of the monastery exchange Ottobeuren. The place receives 1444 by Emperor Frederick III. market rights.

The market Waal was the seat of a rule, which was around 1800 Franz Ludwig Graf Schenk von Castell Empire, the so-called Malefizschenk. With the Act of Confederation, in 1806 the city became part of Bavaria. In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria, was born with the congregation of 1818, the current community.

Incorporations

On 1 July 1971, until then independent municipality Emmenhausen was incorporated. On 1 January 1972 Bronnen followed. On 1 May in 1978 was added Waalhaupten.

The municipal tax revenue amounted to the equivalent of 757 k € in 1999, which amounted to the trade tax revenues ( net) equivalent to € 61 thousand.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms shows in silver and from silver clouds growing the Saint Nicholas in red vestments of the bishop's staff and in the left a missal, on three golden balls in his right hand. It points to the patron of the former parish church of St. Nicholas of Waal and has been kept since the 18th century.

Culture and sights

  • The Kirchdorf Bronnen was in the national competition "Our village is beautiful " award in 1989 at the state finals with a gold medal and the Federal decision with a silver medal.
  • The Waaler Passion Play is performed irregularly and one of the oldest passion play in Bavarian Swabia.

Economy and infrastructure

Economy

It was in 1998 according to official statistics in manufacturing and 102 in trade and transport, no social insurance contributions at the workplace. In other areas, were employed to social security at the workplace 101 people. Social insurance contributions at residence, there were a total of 641 in the manufacturing sector, there were none, in the construction of five plants. In addition, in 1999, there were 61 farms with an agricultural area of 1,602 ha, of which 946 ha of permanent green space.

Education

  • Benedicta Riepp (1825-1862), a nun, was born in Waal.
  • Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914), Portrait painter and sculptor, pioneer of motor racing in Germany, was born in Waal.
  • Peter Dörfler (1878-1955), priest and writer who grew up in Waalhaupten.
  • Otto Kobel (1919-2002), worked as a sculptor, church painter, performer and director in Waal.
