Walter Mazzarri (born 1 October 1961, in San Vincenzo ( LI), Italy ) is a retired Italian footballer and current coach.

Playing career

The midfielder Mazzarri learned his trade in the youth system of Fiorentina. His professional debut was in 1981 for Pescara Calcio in Serie B. For a short time he played in Serie A with Cagliari Calcio, before he was sold to AC Reggiana. The longest Mazzarri ran for FC Empoli, where he was also involved in the first ascent of the team from Tuscany. After some experience with smaller teams of Italians in 1993 was involved in the first ascent of Acireale Calcio in Serie B. In 1995, he finished his career at Sassari Torres.

Coaching career

1998 Walter Mazzarri began his career as an assistant coach Renzo Ulivieri at Napoli. 2001/ 02 he became coach of the Sicilian Serie C2 club SSD Acireale Calcio, where he had already played from 1992 to 1994. 2002/ 03 Mazzarri returned to his Tuscan home as coach of Serie C2 team AC Pistoiese. 2003/ 04 led to the back of the Series B club AS Livorno in the Serie A. In the years 2004 to 2007, he managed three times Reggina Calcio from Calabria in Serie A to keep it in the last year despite a withdrawal of eleven points.

From June 2007 to June 2009, he was coach of UC Sampdoria. From October 2009 he trained as a successor of Roberto Donadoni Napoli. In the 2010/11 season he reached with his team to third place in the league, which Naples qualified for the Champions League 2011 /12.
