Western Province, Zambia

Western province (English Western Province ) is a province in the west of the Republic of Zambia, on the border of Angola and Namibia. The original name was Barotseland because of the Barotse kingdom. The province has 765 088 inhabitants ( 2000 census ) and covers 126,386 km ². This is the original settlement area of the Rotse ( Lozi ).

Barotseland has unilaterally declared independence on 26 March 2012, as the new government of Zambia 's have the autonomy agreements are not complied with by 1964.

Barotseland is the least developed region in Zambia. There are only two paved roads. One leads from Lusaka, the other from Livingstone to the provincial capital Mongu and from there to Sesheke to Zambezi bridge. The region has some autonomy rights. There are political aspirations of the royal family for complete independence of Zambia.

Except for the Kaoma district, this province consists of Kalahari sand areas, flood plains and pastures. Here are the largest herds of Zambia. Once a year, parts are driven by them in Mongu for sale. The agriculture is focused on corn instead of rice, resulting each year in yield losses due to flooding. The yields of grain never reach the level of usage. Hunger is therefore endemic in this province. The predominant subsistence farming is without irrigation.

With less than four people per square kilometers, the province is very sparsely populated. Correspondingly low and not widely, the number of hospitals and schools. Outside of Mongu corresponds to none of them the average level in Zambia. Similarly, there are outside of Mongu neither electricity nor telephone and a drinking water supply and sanitation. The road network is poor with extremely difficult to be overcome sandy passages. The Luena floodplains between Mongu and Lukulu on the left side of the Zambezi are feared because of their Tiefsandigkeit. Here the river seeps Luena.

Tourist attractions of the province are the Liuwa -Plain National Park in the hard to reach Kalabo and Sioma - Ngweizi National Park as the hard to reach Shangombo. Both national parks are without any infrastructure and tourist facilities.
