History

1976 evidence of settlement sites in the range of Wittmar were found which existed during the Stone Age and the Bronze Age. After an excavator when working at ground bone, there was extensive excavations. They promoted the burial ground of Wittmar apparent than neolithic burial site of the Linear Pottery culture of the 4th millennium BC, and a Late Bronze Age settlement site.

The name of the 1244 first mentioned Wittmar community is made up of the Low German word " witt " for white ( Low German ) and the word " mar " ( Old High German ) for swampy area ( "white marsh ").

The church has since 1850 after a lightning strike no steeple. One of the oldest inhabited houses in the region of Braunschweig is the donjon as described more than 500 years old house in the old village. It once served as a toll - taking station.

Former mining

The village Wittmar has been coined as a mining town. Mining began on 25 March 1899, the groundbreaking ceremony for potash mining in the vicinity of today's aces economy. At that time, Wittmar 180 inhabitants, six years on it already 850 (as at 1 July 2008: 1,267 ). On Asseweg and Bismarckstreet the staff had large and well equipped apartments. The mine manager resided in a villa right on the edge of today's avenue of chestnut trees. Right next to the Director's House is still a twin villa which was inhabited by the manager and the chief engineer. The ordinary workers lived in small apartments on the Bahnhofstrasse, with outside toilet and a small barn. From the miners of 1939 forest swimming pool was built in voluntary work 10665 hours old, but used only one summer, as constantly leaked water from the leaking tank.

In July 1906 the water broke into the slot and the promotion had to be stopped. A new shaft was drilled at Remlingen whose salt was conveyed via a cable car to the factory after Wittmar. In 1908, production was at the factory Wittmar be continued. The crises in the potash industry after the First and Second World War but were also felt here, the production was switched to rock salt. Culture and sights

  • Above the town is the Bismarck tower on the ridge of the castle hill of aces. The lookout offers a view over the town and over the Harz foothills of the Brocken.
  • 200 meters away from the Bismarck tower are the remains of the built by Gunzelin of Wolfenbüttel Asseburg, which was completed in 1218 and 1492 destroyed.

Traffic

The Evangelical Lutheran St. Barbara's Church is situated in Church Road 22, their parish belongs to the provost Schoeppenstedt. The New Apostolic congregation was Wittmar the community Wolfenbüttel connected 2007. The Catholic inhabitants belong to the parish of St. Peter in Wolfenbüttel.
