Yury Shulman

Yury Shulman (also: Yuri Shulman, Russian Юрий Маркович Шульман born April 29, 1975 in Minsk ) is a Belarusian- American chess player.

Career

Yury Shulman grew up in Belarus. From the age of six, he received regular chess lessons with the trainer Tamara Golovey. At the age of 12, he continued his studies at the International Master Albert Kapengut and was then cared for by grandmaster Boris Gelfand. In 1994, Shulman won the Belarusian championship. In the same year he was honored for his sporting successes of the Republic of Belarus and was a member of the Olympic team. In 1995 he won the European Junior Championship in Holon and was awarded the grandmaster title. In 1998 he was divided Belarusian champions. 1999 Shulman moved to the United States to study at the University of Texas at Dallas. He has a degree from the State Academy of Physical Education of Belarus, a bachelor degree in computer science and a master's degree from the University of Texas in the specialty finance.

Since he lives in the United States, Shulman where they are one of the leading chess players. With closed U.S. Championship he was in 2004 split of third parties, in 2006 and 2007 Second split in Stillwater, Oklahoma third party, which he qualified for the World Chess Championship 2007. In May 2008, he won the U.S. Championship and was in May 2010 and shared second place after a tie-break in the rapid chess tournament with winner Gata Kamsky.

In 2000 he was winner of the divided U.S. National Open, Texas Champion and winner of the Koltanowski Memorial. He was tied for first at the World Open in 2001 and 2002 at the American Open. He was qualified for the World Championship of FIDE in 2004 in Tripoli, Libya, boycotted the event but together with a number of other masters. In 2005 he was master of Illinois and shared winner of the Millennium Chess Festival, which he qualified in Khanty-Mansiysk for the World Chess Cup 2005. At the World Cup he came through match- successes against Vadim Zvyagintsev and Alexander Khalifman up in the Round of 16, where he retired against Alexander Grishchuk. In 2006 he won the 107th U.S. Open Championship in Chicago and was tied for first in the tournament at the University of Texas. In 2007, he was tied for first in the open of Chicago, won the Lightning playoff Vadim Milov.

As a coach, he was responsible for the U.S. women's team in their fourth place at the Chess Olympiad in Turin in 2006. He is married to the Latvian (now U.S. ) WIM Viktorija Ni. The two have a son.

Shulman came first time in 2001 among the 100 best players in the world rankings. His Elo rating is 2613 in May 2010. His previous best score was 2639 in January 2009.

Chess teacher

Shulman founded the " Yury Shulman International Chess School ". He and his volunteers understand chess as a vehicle for charitable purposes. In the years 2006 and 2007 they gave hours and donations of books for public schools in Chicago. A part of his tournament winnings Shulman donates to charitable organizations. To continue his volunteer activities Shulman founded in May 2007, officially the nonprofit organization "GM Shulman Chess without Borders ". He lives in Barrington, Illinois and teaches chess to the local schools and at home.
