1988–89 2. Bundesliga

In the season 1988/89 the 2nd Bundesliga Fortuna Dusseldorf and FC 08 Homburg achieved promotion to the Bundesliga. The first FC Saarbrücken failed in the relegation games.

Fortuna Dusseldorf returned two years after the descent back to the Bundesliga. The FC 08 Homburg abolished the direct return to the top flight.

Descent

The League Committee of the DFB withdrew on 6 July 1989 Offenbacher Kickers the license. The SpVgg Bayreuth therefore remained as in the previous year as Seventeenth in the league. Besides Offenbach newcomers Aschaffenburg and Mainz, Solingen had to dismount in the league.

Top Scorer of the season was Sven Demandt of Fortuna Dusseldorf with 35 gates.

Expulsion

In the relegation matches the Sixteenth Bundesliga Eintracht Frankfurt and the third in the second Bundesliga 1 FC Saarbrücken clashed.
