1988–89 2. Bundesliga
In the season 1988/89 the 2nd Bundesliga Fortuna Dusseldorf and FC 08 Homburg achieved promotion to the Bundesliga. The first FC Saarbrücken failed in the relegation games.

The League Committee of the DFB withdrew on 6 July 1989 Offenbacher Kickers the license. The SpVgg Bayreuth therefore remained as in the previous year as Seventeenth in the league. Besides Offenbach newcomers Aschaffenburg and Mainz, Solingen had to dismount in the league.
