2008 Latvian Higher League

The Virsliga 2008 was the 17th season of the highest Latvian football league of gentlemen since its foundation in 1992. Officially bears the League name LMT Virsliga ( Latvijas Mobilais phone Virsliga ) and is discharged from the Latvian Football Federation. The season began on April 1 and ended on 9 November 2008. FK Ventspils successfully defended the title from the previous year, and was the third time in the club's history Latvian champion.

Course of the season

The League was first held in 2008 after the Virsliga 1996 with ten teams. Up from the 1st League were the FK Ventspils and SK Vindava Blāzma. The championship was first played in a regular season in return round match. Each team came here twice against every other team. After 18 games in which all teams were each competed against each other twice, the league was divided into two groups with the top six and four poorer teams. After the teams of each group played each twice ( championship round ) or four times against each other ( relegation round ). The first table of the championship round was thus Latvian football champions. The-table the relegation round JFK Olimps went straight into the 1st League from which SK Tabellenvorletzte Blāzma played in the Relegation against second- placed from the second-rate 1st League FC Tranzit and winning this 5-1 and 1-0.
