2010 Vuelta a España

The 65th Vuelta a España was held from August 28, 2010 held to 19 September 2010 and was won by the Sicilian Vincenzo Nibali.

Characteristics and route

The three-week Spanish tour of the country consisted of 21 stages covering a total distance of 3352.6 miles total. It was launched in Seville with a team time trial over 13 kilometers. A total of five stages ended me a mountain top finish. Six stages were held in the Central Mountains. An individual time trial over 46 kilometers was held in Peñafiel. The tour ended on September 19, 2010 in Madrid.

Result and doping

The victory of Nibali won for the first time in 20 years after Marco Giovannetti again an Italian.

Three drivers were tested during the competition on the doping agent HES: Oscar Sevilla, the second overall Ezequiel Mosquera and teammate David García. HES is a blood plasma expander which is not performance-enhancing, although, however, is likely to mask other doping substances. Mosquera was closed in late 2011 by the Spanish Cycling Federation for the period of 16 November 2011 to 15 November 2013, and all his results deleted as of September 12, 2010, so that his stage victory on the twentieth section and the second overall were withdrawn.

Participants

On 14 June 2010 the organizers Unipublic presented the 22 teams invited to the public. This allowed to participate except RadioShack on the Spanish tour of the country all UCI ProTeam. In addition, five Professional Continental teams received a start authorization.
