André Greipel (born 16 July 1982 in Rostock ) is a German racing cyclist. Since 2005 he is a professional and is currently among the world's best sprinters.

Cycling career

In TEAG team Köstritzer André Greipel was one of the most successful racers. After two German championship titles at junior level, he presented himself especially with tours. In Thuringia Tour the U23 he was 2002 winner of the sprint, as the GP Tell.

2003 Greipel won the U23 race Rund um Köln, was stage winner at the Tour of Thuringia and the Tour de Berlin and won the U-23 World Cup races in Waregem. In 2004, the Rostock four stage victories in international tours. In 2005, he celebrated a victory in the Tour of Denmark.

He moved in 2006 to the T- Mobile team, with whom he scored two stage successes in the Rhineland -Palatinate Tour.

He celebrated his largest ever international success at the Vuelta a España 2006, when he was defeated by only the Norwegian Thor Hushovd in the sprint of the sixth stage. At the Tour Down Under 2008, he won four stages and the kick-off criterion of the tour. Thus he secured the victory in the overall standings. Subsequently, he was the first German leader the individual competition of the UCI ProTour. The leader's jersey he could defend to the Amstel Gold Race in April. In final standings he finished in fifth place just behind Roman Kreuziger.

The sprinter won on 1 September 2009, the fourth stage of the Vuelta a España after in a massive crash, all drivers were stopped except for the first seven. After the rest day Greipel also won the fifth stage of the Vuelta on September 3, 2009, when he prevailed in a mass sprint. By winning the stage to Greipel also secured the gold jersey of the overall leader. On 15 September, he also won the 16th stage of the Vuelta and won in the points standings. In 2010 Greipel won both the overall standings of the Tour Down Under as well as three stages. In February, he celebrated stage wins in smaller races. In April he won five stage successes and the sprint jersey of the Tour of Turkey. In May, he won the 18th stage of the Giro d' Italia in a sprint. In August of the same year he was victorious at two stages of the Tour de Pologne and the Eneco Tour. In the 2010 season, he went to a total of 21 victories.

As in Team HTC - Columbia stiff competition prevailed by Mark Cavendish and André Greipel was not nominated for Milan-San Remo and the Tour de France 2010, André Greipel changed for the 2011 season for Omega Pharma-Lotto team, where he was the head of the Sprinter formed. In 2011 Greipel therefore first participated in the Tour de France. On 12 July 2011 he won the 10th stage ahead of Mark Cavendish, whom he beat in the final sprint. He joined the group of cyclists who could drive out stage wins in all three Grand Tours ( Giro, Tour and Vuelta ). In the road race in the Road World Championships 2011 Greipel won on September 25th in a sprint win the bronze medal.

In the 2012 Tour de France Greipel won three stages. In 2013 he won a stage in itself. He also became the first German road champion and won the one-day races Brussels Cycling Classic.

Private

André Greipel is married and has two daughters. He has successfully completed the training as an office clerk. In October 2011, he was honored in his former residence Hürth near Cologne as " Sportsman of the Year ". Greipel lives in the Swiss Alterswilen.
