APOEL F.C.

APOEL Nicosia (Greek: ΑΠΟΕΛ - Aθλητικός Ποδοσφαιρικός Όμιλος Eλλήνων Λευκωσίας / Athlitikos Podosfairikos Omilose Ellinon Lefkosias, German. Athletic Football Club of Greeks of Nicosia ) is a football club based in the Cypriot capital Nicosia. The club currently plays in the first-class First Division and is equipped with 21 championships and 19 Cup wins most successful club in the country.

History

The club was founded on 8 November 1926 under the name POEL in a candy store and was a founding member of the Cyprus Football Association. 1928, the club was renamed to APOEL.

In August 2009 the APOEL celebrated one of its greatest achievements in international football: After victories against EB / Streymur, FK Partizan Belgrade and FC Copenhagen, the collection was achieved in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League 2009/10, against group opponents Chelsea FC, FC Porto Atlético Madrid and APOEL difference with three defeats and three draws as a group from Last.

In August 2011, the club repeated the place in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League 2011/ 12, in the previous qualifying rounds of the club KF Skënderbeu Korçë, ŠK Slovan Bratislava and Wisla Krakow defeated. After wins over Zenit St. Petersburg and FC Porto, the club qualified 23 November 2011 by a draw with the Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg early for the knockout stages. Due to the better balance in a direct comparison against the tied Zenit St. Petersburg this was achieved even as group winners. In the second round APOEL lost the first leg at Olympique Lyon 0-1, but won the return match 4-3 (1-0 ) on penalties and pulled the first Cypriot club into the quarter- finals of the Champions League. For this match-winner became Dionysis Chiotis held with two penalties against Lacazette and Bastos. In the quarterfinals, APOEL lost the first leg against Real Madrid with 0-3. In the return match APOEL lost 2:5 and thus different from the competition.

The club is traditionally considered a pan-Hellenic; resulting from the fact that the club had taken the side of the Right in the Greek civil war. To this day, the supporters of APOEL are considered quite conservative. Local rival is Omonia Nicosia, which had split during the Civil War; Derby is sometimes viewed as a risk games. The supporters of Omonia be attributed to the left of the political camp.
