Aptosid

Aptosid [ aptozɪt ] (proper spelling aptosid, until September 2010 known as sidux [ zi ː dʊks ] own spelling sidux ) is a Debian- unstable -building, non-commercial Linux distribution for desktop computers and notebooks.

It is available as a live CD for i686 and AMD64 architectures and can be installed using a graphical installation wizard. The distribution is highlighted in the press, mainly due to their timeliness. In addition to the full version, which includes all of the components, there is a "light" version with reduced package scope. The default desktop is KDE by Aptosid.

Features

Special emphasis is placed on the development of Aptosid on hardware detection and system speed. The distribution is fully compatible with Debian / unstable " sid ", so that all packages of the Debian repositories are available. Due to the optimization on i686 and focus on current hardware (AMD K7 from, from VIA C7) use with older processors (for example, to AMD K6- or VIA C3) is not readily possible because they do not fully support the instruction set.

Aptosid contains only DFSG -compliant open source software. Aptosid provides for various applications scripts and meta- packages bundled installation of the necessary software, or even of non-free packages. The Aptosid live CD includes the English and German; additional language packs can be installed. However, the DVD contains all supported languages.

By coupling to Debian / unstable distribution is always up to date, one also speaks of a rolling release; However, this is partly at the expense of stability. The live CD is a snapshot of the current state of Aptosid at the time of publication of the current edition is in each case (except for the LiveCD - specific elements, such as the installer ). To update the system Aptosid uses the apt tool. Originally from kanotix originating and until the release of 2008-01 on a so-called " stub installer " in sidux integrated standalone script smxi, which excludes the present in Debian / unstable erroneous packets from the installation using a block list is not part of the distribution.

Name

The name component sid refers to the technical origin " Sid " as Debian / unstable is called internally. Sidux followed with his Auslautung ux on the tradition of other Unix derivatives. Aptosid focuses on the one hand, apt as the name of the Debian package management used for the implementation of the Rolling release. Any other intended interpretations originate from the Latin expression apto of aptus = match ( made ), and the Greek term απ'το ( ap'to ) = (incoming) of. The names of the various published versions are borrowed from Greek mythology and are supplemented by the year and an annual version number.

History

Sidux continued the former conception of kanotix and emerged from this distribution, after its developer Jörg Schirottke had a more commercially -oriented line for the sake of Debian / unstable away from as a base. This sidux took over the previous function of kanotix within the Linux distributions and was the only distribution which is based directly and exclusively on Debian's development branch " Sid ". This tradition is still valid for Aptosid. Sidux was founded on 24 November 2006 by former kanotix developers.

Since 26 November 2006, long before sidux was released as a combustible ISO image for CD and DVD, it could be installed as a functioning operating system on the PC by a previous kanotix installation has been updated by a script with sources from the repository to sidux. The first sidux live CD with the name " Χάος " ( chaos ) and the designation 2007-01 was officially released on 22 February 2007.

In February 2007 sidux was awarded Distrowatch and was given under which a donation of $ 350.

In the following months sidux was always content of tests with Linux special issues of PC magazines, as a test in December 2007 by the chip, where the compromise between timeliness and stability is explained. The PC World Linux 2/2008 includes sidux addition to various other Linux distributions on the DVD. Linux Life, an offshoot of PC magazine, has in issue 02/ 08 also has a report.

Since December 9, 2009 sidux is a SPI connected project.

After it came to disputes between the sidux eV and the developers, a separation between development and club was decided in a general meeting on August 14, 2010. The development team developed independently of this distribution. To be on the trademark dispute between development team and club out of the way, the distribution was renamed Aptosid. After less than a month revision period Aptosid was published on 11 September 2010.

Because of differences in dealing with the user community in the summer of 2011 was a fork of aptosid who calls himself siduction. This also is a derivative of Debian Sid, but would like to include the end-user participation in the development as it does aptosid.

Sidux eV

To support and finance the distribution of profit association was April 1, 2007 " sidux eV " was founded with headquarters in Berlin. The Articles of Association defines the goals that go beyond the exclusive promotion and distribution of sidux. After separating from club and developer community, the association plans to promote future generally free software.

Previous Publications

The plan is to publish each about every three months a new version. There were usually four different CDs for each version, but are since version 2007-04.5 a fully equipped DVD and two CDs offered for reasons of space.

Derivatives

As with many Linux distribution, there are also variations of sidux. This is, in this case especially to versions with a different localization, for a celtux with an Irish ( Gaelic ) localization, on the other Deb -on -air with a French.

Seminarix

Another derivative is Seminarix, which was still based in Version 1.0 on Kubuntu, since sidux 2008.1 - seminarix now but for reasons of speed on sidux is based. This distribution was developed from the study seminar Neuss for teacher education and upper secondary education, and specially adapted to the requirements in education. Unlike Edubuntu the operating system was not " trivialized ". In the foreground was a good mix between educational software of all subjects with major office and graphics software to create. Sidux Seminarix supported in a special version older hardware (for example, processors instruction set before i686 ).
