Geography

Geographical location

The community lies in the Westerwald between Limburg and victories in the Kroppacher Switzerland, which is a part of the Protected Landscape Area Nistertal. Through the town flows the Great Nister. The district covers 239 hectares, of which about 50 % forest and 38 % agricultural area ( as of 2012). Neighboring towns are Limbach in the north, Atzelgift in the east, the monastery Marienstatt the southeast and Müschenbach the south of town. To the west of Astert is the Aßberg (327 m).

History

1282 Astert was first mentioned in a document of the monastery Marienstatt as Asterode. When clearing the village there was probably built in the 10 th century or before. In the 18th century Asterode has ground to " Astert ". Due to the many roof slate quarries were located in many Leyendecker Astert from the 16th to the 18th century. In 1579 the town had 13 houses. A former roof slate quarry ( Hardt ) existed until about 1911 and was finally abandoned after 1945.

Tensions existed in place by immigrant Catholics from the Bergische and Wildenburger country, which benefited from the monastery Marienstatt and Catholic Salentin Count Ernst von Manderscheid. Only after decades, mostly through marriage, they were full -fledged citizens. A process at the Imperial Chamber Court Wetzlar in 1732 brought them the complete freedom of religion. The continuous disputes between the religious groups expressed themselves in a spatial separation, while Catholics almost exclusively found in the lower village, settled the Reformed to the now emerging Oberndorf. 1793 had the whole place 20 houses with 125 inhabitants. After the Napoleonic Wars, the population, which continued in the Nassau time impoverished. 1926 was the first school in Astert. Economically significant were the slate quarries, which were in operation from 1730 to 1760 and from 1840 to 1860. Coat of arms
