Austropop

Austropop is a musical flow that originated in Austria from about the mid-1960s.

It is less about a specific style, but rather an indication of origin, since under this term firmierten musicians of different genres from rock to hip- hop to the alternative scene. Overlaps exist with the new folk music or the alpine rock, ie a mixture of Alpenländischer folk music and rock music. The hit is usually not expected to Austropop including the popular hit song.

History

Origins

The origins of Austropop can be traced to the 19th century with the satirical theater. This was a pioneer Johann Nestroy and Ferdinand Raimund, which are sometimes referred to as ancestors in the tradition of often politically and socially critical and presented in dialect song. Was Raymond's work still resting on the Biedermeier period, Nestroys pieces were already on the social upheavals of the pre-March period.

Other influences come from the area Wienerlied. A famous, especially as an actor, but also as a performer known in the genre was Hans Moser, who served as national actors between the late 19th and mid-20th century. The best known song is sung him Phylloxera.

At a somewhat later time, the Austrian-Swiss duo Pirron and Knapp celebrated his success with cabaret music. Their lyrics were written as Moser in dialect and were presented with humor.

In the 1950s and 1960s developed - just before the wave dialect - Schlager an increasingly popular genre. Musicians like Udo Jürgens and Peter Alexander celebrated with their mixture of pop music, pop and chanson in Austria and also in Germany with great success. As a pop artist but they are usually not counted for Austropop.

The dialect wave of the 1970s

The emergence of Austropop was accompanied by a number of artists who sang in her dialect, initially especially the Viennese. Already in the 1960s, the Worried Men Skiffle Group had to think i am bled a considerable for those days hit presents.

End of the 1960s and early 1970s, then created a number of musicians, in addition to songs in High German, is steadily increasing in their dialect. Among the first nationally popular recordings were Marianne Mendts Wia a Glock'n (1970, text: Gerhard Bronner ) and Wolfgang Ambros ' Da Hofa ( 1971, text: Joesi Prokopetz ). An initial moderate success was achieved by the singer-songwriter Georg Danzer, who had written earlier single dialect songs, with the single The Tschik in 1972. His breakthrough came a little later with Jö show (1975). Also in 1972 had Wilfried Ziwui Ziwui with a first hit. Based on the success of these songs the dialect was established in the pop music of the country.

For the popularity of these young musicians and in 1969 by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF ) was created in broadcast show chance. As a platform for new pop artist planned, including the career of the singer and guitarist Peter Cornelius evolved from this action. He was, as well as sometimes Ambros, said to have a musical proximity to Danzer, whose lyrics were much more serious than those of Cornelius ' but.

Regardless of the anti- German speaking entertainment music schmaltz adoption of ORF general director Gerd Bacher of Austropop in the early days of the company founded in 1967 ORF radio station Ö3 of individual radio producers as Evamaria Emperor was strongly encouraged. The development of this flow was also partly due to the dominance of English-language music in pop culture, which brought writers and artists to present their texts in German or in their own dialect. The language then formed the biggest hurdle for many of the artists that are international, beyond the German-speaking successes often disabled.

From German language to English, from dialect to New Wave

The Austropop experienced two highlights: the first was between 1973 and 1976, where Wolfgang Ambros and Georg Danzer had their great successes that are still very much in demand today.

In addition to the dialect became more popular with the late 1970s the English language in music. The Austropop thus evolved into a more diverse genre. Successful band that sang in English, Kurt Hauenstein Supermax was that landed an international number-one hits with their hit Love Machine. Supermax was, among other things, the first band to perform in South Africa under apartheid with a suspension consisting of white and black tape before as a mixed crowd. Next to mention for this period would be Waterloo & Robinson or Goldie Ens.

The German New Wave of the 1980s was also for many Austrian bands paved the way to success. In particular Minisex was with German lyrics found several times in the charts. In this period also covers the great successes of the First General uncertainty, which were also known in other European countries with humorous tinged, often political lyrics.

The dialect wave ebbed increasingly. 1981 was to find a song in dialect at the top of the charts after a long time with Autostrada del Sole Rain Fendrich. Wolfgang Ambros and Georg Danzer time were successful with their albums rather than with singles and had from that time no more big hit.

In Vienna formed up with the band Kurt Eastern Railway & the Chefpartie to the former singer of the political rock band butterflies, Willi Resetarits, another band who translated for the time being famous blues, rock, folk and rhythm and blues pieces to the Viennese, but then also specifically wrote the lyrics for songs. Since its inception, it could set the number-one hit in the album charts three times. 2003, the group was disbanded due to the death of lyricist and idea generator Günter Brödl. A moment last album, also on the new hits were found, appeared in 2005.

Worldwide success in the 1980s

With the advent of New Wave scene more new artists came to popularity. At the beginning of the 1980s celebrated Falco, also referred to as the first German rappers ( the Commissioner ), international success. To date, he is next to Hauenstein / Supermax, the most important international Austrian pop musician. Shortly before, Reinhold Bilgeri had climbed with video Life at the top of the Brazilian charts. In 1984, the band Opus had another international hit with Live Is Life. A year later it was again Falco, who led the charts with Rock Me Amadeus in numerous countries. He was by Anton Karas, the second Austrian, who had a number-one hit in the U.S.. In the German speaking part of the First Floor with bank robbery, Prince Charming (1985 ) or Fata Morgana (1987 ) was able to land success.

From 1990 to 2009

From 1990, it was initially quiet about the Austropop. The SAB and Rain Fendrich achieved some chart positions and Hubert von Goisern celebrated in 1992 with its original Alpinkatzen his debut. With the " Alpine rock " created a new genre, a first hit was the Hiatamadl von Goisern. By the time the genre was transferred to many other areas. Among the more oriented to the folk music groups are about the Ausseer Hardbradler and the Seer. As a generic term for this style is new folk music established.

From the mid- 1990s, Austrian musicians were from the field of pop music played little more of the local radio stations, especially the decades dominant station Ö3. The reason given was called, there was a lack of promising artists. Blonde With Rain Fendrich in 1997 there was the so far last number -one hit in the Viennese dialect, which falls under the term pop music. End of the 1990s established Danzer, Ambros Fendrich and for a charity project, the project Austria 3 and toured the German-speaking countries, but also gave concerts in other countries.

In the field of hip-hop and electronic music, although some Austrian musician and formations were able to gain a foothold internationally, they are usually not counted for Austropop. The early 2000s were artists such as Brand or Tamee Harrison, and partly international, partly achieve a certain level of awareness. Zabine, former singer of the Alpinkatzen, created a blend of folk music and electronic music.

Successful musician in recent years is Christina Stürmer, the runner-up of the first season of the ORF talent show Star Mania (2002/2003), which reached both in Austria and in Germany and Switzerland, front seats hit parade. In addition, formations like SheSays, second wife and Luttenberger * Klug gained national notoriety greater.

Young bands offer, among other radio stations, with the FM4 Sound Park and Ö3 with the Ö3 Soundcheck, an opportunity to present about FM4 to a wider public. To build on the success Christina Sturmer started Ö3, part of the ORF, which produced the Star Mania casting shows, the action, the new Austrians to young bands and musicians to promote it in 2007; a part of those who had previously competed at Star Mania. The particular dialect was not used by those bands rarely, usually sung in High German or English.

Return of the dialect in the mainstream

In 2010, there were several Austrian hits in the charts that were sung in dialect and achieved high rankings. These included Vo Mello Taunz from Holstuonarmusigbigbandclub and Oida to ge Schoppornou! of Trackshittaz. A few months later, Hubert von Goisern Brenna reached with his song tuats guat number one in the Austrian charts.
