Biathlon World Championships

The Biathlon World Championships of the International Biathlon Union ( IBU ) organized in the years without Olympic Winter Games. By 2009, the world championships were usually mid-to late February. 2011, the title fights are first held early to mid- March as the highlight of the season before the last World Cup.

Qualification

The occupation of the places in the world championships will be made by the national federations. German starters are nominated by the DSV when they finish a 15 World Cup races among the top 8 or two races in the TOP.

Competitions

Disciplines

With Individual, Sprint, Pursuit, Mass Start, Relay and Mixed Relay is the current World Championship program in six disciplines. The single race since the first Biathlon World Cup 1958 in the program. Until 1965 medals were awarded because the relay race was not an official part of the Biathlon World Championships for this discipline. The Sprint was first held in 1974 at the World Championships and placed so that the second addition to the single individual discipline dar. Since the late 1980s, the program will be expanded continuously. In 1989, the team competition was added, but this was canceled back in 1998. The pursuit race since 1997, an integral part of the World Championships, the mass start since 1999. At the 2007 World Championships Mixed Relay has been integrated for the first time in the competition program. Rating

In years when the Olympic Winter Games champion be determined only in those competitions that do not belong to the Olympic program. Venues

Total so far Biathlon World Championships were held in 14 different countries. Switzerland and France were likewise hosts, but only the unofficial women's world championships.

The most successful athletes

The most successful participants in the World Championships is Ole Einar Bjørndalen with 19 gold medals, eleven silver medals and nine bronze medals. He is followed by Frank Luck ( 11-5-4 ), Emil Hegle Svendsen ( 11-4-2 ) and Alexander Tikhonov ( 11-4-1 ). As with the Olympics Ole Einar Bjørndalen is at the World Championships the most successful participants in individual disciplines, he won a total of eleven gold, four silver and seven bronze medals. Summer World Championships
