Brumaire

The Brumaire ( German and fog month) is the second month of the Republican Calendar of the French Revolution. He follows the Vendémiaire, it follows the Frimaire.

The name is derived from French brume (fog). The Brumaire is the second month of autumn quarter ( mois d' automne ). He begins around October 23 and ends around November 21.

On the 18th Brumaire (9 November 1799) of Napoleon's coup d'etat took place. The term Brumaire is often used as name for this event, but also as a generic name for the failure of a revolution in a coup from within the company ( " a new / second Brumaire ").

Is particularly well known in this context Karl Marx's writing The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte, dealing with the takeover of power by Napoleon III. dealing in 1851.

Day names

Like all months of the French Revolution calendar had Brumaire 30 days, which were divided into 3 decades. The days were named after agricultural plants, except for the 5th and 10th day of each decade. The 5th day ( Quintidi ) was named after a pet, the 10th day ( Decadi ) to an agricultural implement.

Some of the original proposals of Fabre d' Églantine were not accepted. Except for the 22 and 25 the final chosen name synonyms of the original proposal.
