Buffalo Soapstone is a census -designated place (CDP ) in Matanuska- Susitna Borough in Alaska in the United States. The area is located on the Moose Creek Road north of Palmer and Farm Loop and west of the Glenn Highway.

History

The Matanuska- Susitna whole valley was laid out as a planned agricultural colony. 203 families, mostly from Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota, moved in 1935 to the area. Many of their descendants still live there. Low housing costs, the rural lifestyle and the proximity to the city of Anchorage beneficiary population growth.

Demography

At the time of the census in 2000 ( U.S. Census 2000) had Buffalo Soapstone CDP 699 inhabitants on a land area of 58.5 km ². The average age was 33.4 years ( national U.S. average: 35.3 years ). The per capita income ( per capita income engl. ) amounted to U.S. $ 18,021 ( U.S. National Average: U.S. $ 21,587 ). 22.2 % of residents were with their income below the poverty line ( national U.S. average: 12.4% ) .18,3 % of the population is English, 17.7% German and 11.9% of Italian descent. Many residents work in Palmer, Wasilla and Anchorage.
