Palmer is a city in and also the administrative center ( Borough Seat) Matanuska- Susitna Borough of Alaska in the United States. The city is located in the center of the Matanuska- Susitna Valley, about 68 kilometers northeast of Anchorage and is accessible via the Glenn Highway.

The city was founded in 1916 as a railway station of the Alaska Railroad. In 1935 203 families in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota moved to Palmer, where they founded with the support of the State of a real city.

Demography

At the time of the census in 2000 ( U.S. Census 2000) Palmer had 4533 inhabitants on a land area of 9.7 km ². The average age was 28.8 years ( national U.S. average: 35.3 years ). The per capita income ( per capita income engl. ) amounted to U.S. $ 17,203 ( U.S. National Average: U.S. $ 21,587 ). 12.7 % of residents were with their income below the poverty line ( national U.S. average: 12.4 %). 20.4% of the inhabitants are of German origin, 11.3% are Irish and 10.3% English ancestry.
