Catholicism in Argentina

The Roman Catholic Church in Argentina is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope and curia in Rome.

History

Already in 1570 the diocese of Cordoba was founded, which in 1620 was followed by the founding of the diocese of Buenos Aires. After it had come back in the 19th century the creation of new dioceses, there was 1934 a reorganization of the Argentinean dioceses were erected in which new church provinces.

Pope John Paul II had a major role in the pacification of the Beagle conflict in November 1978, the peace treaty between Argentina and Chile in 1984.

The Argentine Bishops can not agree for years on an open discussion of the role of the church during the military junta in Argentina ( 1976-1983 ). The Roman Curia responded for several years with increased influence on the situation, most recently with the appointment of bishops against the wishes of the conservative Argentine Episcopal Conference. First time in 2007, a Catholic priest was sentenced to life imprisonment for their involvement in crimes committed during the military dictatorship.
