Charlotte Checkers (1956–77)

The Charlotte Checkers were an American ice hockey franchise of the Eastern Hockey League and the Southern Hockey League from Charlotte, North Carolina.

History

The franchise was founded in Baltimore, Maryland, under the name Baltimore Clippers as a member of the Eastern Hockey League. As the own stadium a burnt down, the team was five games before the end of the 1955/56 season to Charlotte, North Carolina, relocated and renamed Charlotte Rebels. The following four years were spent, the team under the name Charlotte Clippers, before it adopted the name Charlotte Checkers. When the Eastern Hockey League was disbanded in 1973, the Checkers were transferred to the Southern Hockey League. In the years 1975 and 1976, the Checkers occupied by each of the regular season first place in the table of the Southern Hockey League, winning in the playoffs, the championship of the league. Thus, they were the most successful team in the league. After the 1976/77 season ended prematurely for financial reasons and the league has been set, set the Charlotte Checkers, a game operation.

Only in 1993 an eponymous team in the East Coast Hockey League game operation again and continued the tradition of the Charlotte Checkers.
