Charlotte Checkers (1993–2010)

The Charlotte Checkers were a U.S. Hockey Team from Charlotte, North Carolina that belonged from 1993 to 2010 the ECHL. Since the season 2010/11, an eponymous team plays in the American Hockey League.

History

The team was founded in 1993 and played until 2005 in the Cricket Arena and then in the Time Warner Cable Arena, where the attendance record was achieved. On February 10, 2007 11,237 spectators watched the home game against the Texas Wildcatters.

Although the team has not founded until 1993, there were in 1956 before Ice Hockey in Charlotte. The Baltimore Clippers had to find a new venue after a fire in their arena and found this in North Carolina. The games were in the Charlotte Coliseum (now Cricket Arena) held for the remainder of the season. After the season, the team decided to stay in Charlotte and so they gave in 1960 the nickname Checkers. 1973 closed to the Southern Hockey League, where they played until the closure of the league in 1977.

From 1993 to 1998 John Marks was as head coach behind the gang and qualified with the team five times in a row for the play-offs. After the team after a positive balance in the regular season in the first playoff round twice against the Greensboro Monarchs had failed in the first two seasons, took place in the 1995/96 season after victories against the Roanoke Express, South Carolina Stingrays, Tallahassee Tiger Sharks and Jacksonville Lizard Kings winning the Riley Cup. Goalkeeper Nick Vitucci was voted best player of the finals as Riley Cup Playoffs Most Valuable Player.

On 10 February 2010, the franchise owner Michael Kahn announced that he had successfully purchased the AHL Albany River Rats franchise. With the start of the 2010/11 season, the Checkers took the place of the River Rats in the American Hockey League. The background of the acquisition was that the River Rats with their settlement in New York State do not make any profit and the state of North Carolina is considered more lucrative market for the team in this regard.
