Louisiana IceGators (ECHL)

The Louisiana IceGators were an American Hockey franchise from Lafayette, Louisiana. The venue of the IceGators was the Cajundome.

History

The franchise was founded in 1995 and took his game to operating in the East Coast Hockey League. Head coach Doug Shedden was, who played in his playing career in the NHL. Already in its first season, the IceGators reached the play-offs after they had in the regular season with 92 points won the South Division. In the first round of the playoffs, the Jacksonville Lizard Kings IceGators the subject scarce. In the following season after qualifying for the final round, in which the one after the IceGators Mobile Mysticks, Birmingham Bulls and Peoria Rivermen defeated and made ​​their way into the finals at the Kelly Cup. The IceGators subject to the South Carolina Stingrays in five games.

In the following years the team was able to qualify constant for the play-offs, but only in the 1999 /00 Louisiana succeeded once again the way into the finals, where they were subject to the Peoria Rivermen in six games. In the 2001 /02 season, the Louisiana IceGators won with 116 points, the highest ever score for the ECHL history and as a result won the Henry Brabham Cup. The IceGators then subject, however, in the second playoff round against the Jackson Bandits in five games. In the last season of the franchise in 2004 / 05, the IceGators played their worst season in which the team reached just 58 points and missed the play-offs clear. That was the only time the IceGators did not qualify for the play- offs. In recent years, the number of spectators at the IceGators declined, so the franchise had to be canceled due to financial problems in January 2006 after no investors could be found.
