There, the franchise has been a farm team of the Florida Panthers from the National Hockey League. The Matadors played during their single season, the 1998/99 season in which they missed as the seventh of the Southeast Division of the playoffs for the Kelly Cup, in the clear überdemensionierten Miami Arena. Since this was a crowd of 14 823, the management of the Matadors at home games decided to open only the lower part, which reduced the capacity of 6,351 spectators. But even with the reduced capacity was not sold out a single home game of the season. Therefore, it was decided the last two home games in the Germain Arena in Estero, Florida, unsubscribe.

After the franchise was inactive two years, the former owner sold the ECHL Cincinnati Cyclones to the license from the defunct International Hockey League.
