Daniel F. Davis

Daniel Franklin Davis ( born September 12, 1843 in Freedom, Waldo County, Maine, † January 9, 1897 ) was an American politician and from 1880 to 1881 governor of Maine.

Early years

After Davis had graduated from different schools, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1869. Then he began to work in his new profession in East Corinth, Maine. During the American Civil War he was a soldier in a cavalry regiment from Maine.

Political career

Between 1871 and 1875 the Republicans had Davis deputy in the regional parliament of Maine and then from 1875 to 1879 in the National Senate of that State. In 1879 he was appointed by the Legislature as the new governor of Maine, having achieved an absolute majority at the regular election no candidate. Davis began his one-year term on 17 January 1880. In this time it was discussed in Maine violently to the prohibition law. In 1880, Davis applied unsuccessfully for re-election. Between 1882 and 1886 he was then head of the customs authority at the port of Bangor.

End of life and family

Daniel Davis died on January 9, 1897. He was married to Laura Godwin, with whom he had eight children.
