Danuta Hübner

Danuta Hübner ( born April 8, 1948 in Nisko, Poland) is a Polish economist, politician of the liberal-conservative Civic Platform and since 2009 a member of the European Parliament. Previously, she was, among other things, European Commissioner for Regional Policy.

Private

1971 Danuta Hübner received a diploma in economics from the University of Economics in Warsaw. Subsequently, she was several times fellow and visiting scholar at universities abroad. In 1974 she received her PhD, 1980, the Habilitation. Since 1992 she has been Professor of Economics. She is married and has two daughters.

Political career

From 1970 to 1987 Danuta Hübner was a member of the communist Polish United Workers' Party, but was only from 1994 actually politically active. From 1994 to 1996 she was Secretary of State in the Polish Ministry of Industry. In 1997 she was head of the Chancellery of the Polish President and held this office until 1998. From 1998 to 2001 she served as Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Europe of the United Nations. From 2001 to 2003 she was Secretary of State in the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from 2003 to 2004, finally even Minister.

From the accession of Poland to the European Union on 1 May 2004, Danuta Hübner was European Trade Commissioner together with the Frenchman Pascal Lamy. On October 18, 2004, she was responsible in the new Commission for regional policy. In the European elections in 2009, she was elected with 311 018 votes in the European Parliament, and therefore had to waive their commission office; her successor was her compatriot Paweł Samecki. However, in the Parliament, they remained in the same policy field active and was elected Chairman of the Committee on Regional Development. In September 2010, she was involved in the founding of the so-called Spinelli Group, which campaigns for the European federalism.
