Denny Smith

Dennis Alan " Denny " Smith ( born January 19, 1938 in Ontario, Malheur County, Oregon) is an American politician. Between 1981 and 1983 he represented the second and from 1983 to 1991 the fifth electoral district of the state of Oregon in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Denny Smith is the son of Elmo Smith, who was 1956-1957 Governor of Oregon. He is also a cousin of Steve Symms, who represented 1973-1992 the state of Idaho in both chambers of the U.S. Congress.

Denny Smith studied until 1961 at the Willamette University in Salem and then served from 1958 to 1960 in the U.S. Air Force. Between 1960 and 1962 he was a member of the Air Corps of the National Guard. Then he re-entered the Air Force, in which he was then also used 1962-1967 in the Vietnam War. Even after the end of his time in the military remained loyal Smith of flying. He worked 1967-1976 as a flight engineer and co-pilot of a private airline. At times, he also appeared as a lobbyist for its airlines in Washington. After the death of his father in 1968 he also took over the newspaper business.

Smith was, like his father, a member of the Republican Party. Following his victory in the congressional elections of 1980, he moved into the U.S. House of Representatives where he performed on 3 January 1981, the successor of Al Ullman on. In the next elections in 1982, Smith then moved to the newly created fifth district of Oregon. After several re- elections he could exercise his mandate until January 3, 1991. 1994 Denny Smith ran unsuccessfully for the office of governor of Oregon. Smith has been divorced twice and has four children. He is still working in the newspaper business, where he directs the publishing house Eagle Newspapers.
