Andrew J. Thayer

Andrew Jackson Thayer ( born November 27, 1818 in Lima, New York, † April 28, 1873 in Corvallis, Oregon) was an American lawyer and politician. In 1861, he represented the state of Oregon in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years

Andrew Thayer was the older brother of William Wallace Thayer, who served as Governor of Oregon 1878-1882. Andrew attended the public schools of his home. After a subsequent law degree in 1849 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he began in his native Lima along with his brother William his new profession exercise. In 1853 he moved west and settled in Benton County in what was then Oregon Territory down. There he worked both as a lawyer as well as in agriculture.

Controversial congressional elections

On March 2, 1859 Thayer was appointed by U.S. President James Buchanan to the Federal Attorney for Oregon. He has practiced for six months this office. Thayer was a member of the Democratic Party. In November 1860 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. This was controversial from the beginning, because had already taken place in June of the same year in Oregon general election, in which George K. Shiel had been elected to Congress. In the meantime, we had a date for the midterm elections in Oregon laid with immediate effect on November without meeting statutory regulations regarding the already conducted election. In November, won Andrew Thayer. Thus, Oregon had two elected Congressman for only one mandate.

Andrew Thayer took on 4 March 1861 his seat in the House of Representatives, while George Shiel, however, complained because he had been elected validly even in this office. On July 30, the congressional committee that deals with elections dealt ( Committee on Elections ) came to the conclusion that Shiel was the rightful Congressman for Oregon. Then Thayer had to vacate his seat.

Further CV

After his return to Oregon Andrew Thayer again worked with his brother William as a lawyer. Between 1862 and 1864 he was district attorney for the second judicial district of Oregon. In 1870 he was appointed as a judge to the Supreme Court of Oregon. At the same time he was district judge in the second judicial district. These offices he held until his death in 1873.
