Donald Johnson

Donald James Johnson ( born September 9, 1968 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania ) is a former American professional tennis player.

Career

Johnson started his professional career in 1992 and has since played predominantly in doubles. In individual he competed in 23 matches, but never won a title. In doubles he played alongside Patrick Rafter, Tom Mercer and others before he formed a duo with Leander Paes. Together they have won three Challenger tournaments. In 1993, he won another tournament the Challenger Tour in Nagoya, Japan for together with Jonas Björkman. With Kent Kinnear, he played again after one year a final in Cherbourg, which was lost against Neil Broad and Johan De Beer. This was followed by a number of early defeats to July 1994, when he won the tournament in New Ulm with Jack Waite. With Waite Johnson was another success in Mendoza in February 1995.

From 1996 he played with Francisco Montana, with whom he 1996 the quarterfinals of the French Open and reached won two titles on the ATP Tour. Overall, she denied to the end of 1998 ten finals, from which they could win seven. With Piet Norval Johnson won four titles in 2000, including the Tennis Masters Cup in Bangalore. At the Wimbledon Championships in 2000, he secured together with Kimberly Po the title in mixed doubles. With his next partner, Jared Palmer, he could win Wimbledon in 2001 and reached the final of the U.S. Open. In the finals of Wimbledon beating Jiří Novák and David Rikl 4:6, 6:4, 3:6, 6:7. That same year, Johnson played his only match for the U.S. team in the Davis Cup. With Palmer he lost against the Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes in four sets.

In 2002, he still reached the semifinals at the Australian Open and became world number doubles.
