Egor Mekhontsev

Yegor Mechonzew Leonidovich (Russian Егор Леонидович Мехонцев, scientific transliteration Egor Leonidovič Mechoncev; born November 14, 1984 in Asbestos, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Soviet Union ) is a Russian boxer. It was 2012 Olympic champion in the light heavyweight division, 2009 Amateur World Champion and 2008 and 2010 European champion in the heavyweight division.

Career

Yegor Mechonzew, member of Dynamo Sverdlovsk, was already in the junior age to the best Russian amateur boxers. In 2003 he was employed at the Junior European Championships in Warsaw in the middleweight division and won the title there with a win in the final over Elnur Gadirow from Azerbaijan.

In 2004 he started at the Russian Championship of seniors in the light heavyweight and lost the final against Mikhail Gala on points. He was runner-up again in 2005 Russian light heavyweight when he lost again in the finals against Mikhail Gala by points ( 24:39 ). In the same year he won the traditional Strandjata tournament in Plovdiv Bulgarian competition in the light heavyweight division with wins over Utkir Soipow from Uzbekistan, Mohamad Sahraouri from Tunisia and his compatriot Yevgeny Kainow. He was nominated by the then Russian head coach Alexander Lebsiak for the World Championships in Mianyang / China. In Mianyang he triumphed over John Dovi of France ( 39:18 ) and Istvan Szucs of Hungary ( 30:10 ) on points, but lost in the quarter- final against Utkirbek Haydarow from Uzbekistan by points ( 29:39 ) and thus missed a medal.

2006 was subject Yegor Mechonzew at the Russian Championship semi-final against Artur Beterbijew on points and got away with it on the third place. At the 2nd World University Championship 2006 in Almaty, he lost in the quarterfinals against Jerdos Dschanabergenow from Kazakhstan and reached fifth place.

In 2007, Yegor Mechonzew could not yet be master Russian. He defeated light heavyweight against Evgeny Makarenko for points and finished in third place again. He celebrated this year but one tournament win in Ostrava, when he defeated Croatia Grand Prix Daugirdas Semiotas from Lithuania and Mario Sivolja.

In 2008 Mechonzew moved to the heavyweight and defeated in the final of the Russian Cup Yevgeny Romanov by points ( 19:5 ). He won the Russian championship for the first time. At the Olympic Games in Beijing Rachim Tschakchijew was used in the heavyweight division but the Olympic champion was also. But Yegor Mechonzew was allowed at the 2008 European Championships in Liverpool at the start against. He defeated there Nasi Hani from Macedonia by termination in the fourth round (injury ) and Stephen Simmons of Scotland ( 14:1 ), Petrişor Gănănău, Romania ( 5:2 ) and Tsolak Ananikjan, Armenia ( 9:2 ) respectively on points and thus became European champion in the heavyweight division.

In September 2009 Mechonzew won the world title in the heavyweight division at the 15th Amateur World Championships in Milan. He defeated there in the first round of the German Stefan Köber ( 24:3 ) and Elchin Alizade from Azerbaijan ( 10:0 ). In Achteifinale he met the defending champion and silver medalist of the Olympic Games in 2008, Clemente Russo, and beat the Italians 7-5 on points. In the quarterfinals, he defeated the Turks, Bahram Muzaffer ( 6:0 ) and in the semifinal of the Ukrainian Aleksander Usik ( 14:10). The final he won clearly with 12:2 points against Cuban Osmay Acosta.

In the staged in Moscow in June 2010 European Championships Yegor Mechonzew succeeded the sovereign title defense at heavyweight. With victories over Stefan Köber ( 10:2 ), the Romanian Constantin Bejenaru ( 10:3 ), Denys Pojazyka from the Ukraine and in the final against the Bulgarians Terwel Pulew (10:1), brother of the super heavyweight European Champion 2008 Kubrat Pulew, succeeded sovereign of the new title.

In 2011, he returned alternating with Artur Beterbijew that rose in the heavyweight division in the light heavyweight division. For his participation in the 2011 World Championships in Baku, he finished in third place. After victories against the Estonians Ainar Karlson ( 19:12 ), the American Marcus Browne ( 14:6 ) and the Ukrainian Oleksandr Gwosdyk ( 27:21 ) he lost in the semifinals against Cuban Julio Cesar La Cruz ( 15:21 ).

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London Mechonzew won the gold medal in the light heavyweight division. He defeated in the second round of the Australian Damien Hooper ( 19:11 ), in the quarterfinals of the Uzbeks Elshod Rasulov ( 19:15), in the semifinals of the Brazilian Yamaguchi Falcao ( 23:11 ) and in the finale the Kazakhs Adilbek Nijazymbetow (15 : 15 ).
