Career

Early years and doping samples

Lamaze coming from disadvantaged social backgrounds, he left school at 14 years. At this time his mother was sitting in prison for dealing cocaine, his grandmother was addicted to alcohol. At 15, he got the chance to work in the stables of Roger Deslauriers (father of the former Canadian, now U.S. Nations Cup rider Mario Deslauriers ) in Bromont at Montreal, where he was for three years. During this time he was successful in the age group of juniors, from 1992, he then started on large equestrian events. In 1993, he first participated in a Nations Cup for Canada. In 1994, he first participated at the World Equestrian Games, this year he was also second in the Canadian World Cup League.

Shortly before the 1996 Olympic Games Lamaze tested positive for cocaine. This meant that he was removed from the Canadian Olympic team and initially suspended for four years. However, Lamaze could argue that this is not negotiated by an athletic performance impact, but that this constituted a private problem. Then the lock has been shortened to seven months, Lamaze received by the association a second chance. Shortly before the 2000 Olympics, he was tested positive again, this time on the substance ephedrine. As a result, he was excluded for life from all equestrian activities. Lamaze announced that the positive sample derived from a food supplement, which was not declared correct. This was confirmed by the manufacturer. Then, the lock was released. As a result, Canada's Olympic association was confirmed by all potential Olympic athletes that they are taking any prohibited means. Under this action, Lamaze was personally asked to take up again a doping control. This was as early as 1996 positive for cocaine. His lawyer argued that the lifetime ban for ephedrine should not have been pronounced. This is also the reason for the renewed cocaine use. This should not be sanctioned even as Lamaze have not been subject to regulations of the Olympian Association of Canada during the first barrier. The remarks of counsel also referred to the difficult childhood of his client as well as its depression. Then the second, due to the renewed cocaine use pronounced lifetime ban was lifted.

Success years and loss

Lamaze great success came with the acquisition of his horse Hickstead success. As of 2005, Lamaze Hickstead took part in a variety of important international competitions and championships, crowned by winning the singles gold medal at the Summer Olympics 2008.

One week after the Pan American Games 2011 took Lamaze with Hickstead in the World Cup tournament in Verona, Italy. Immediately after completion of the course, the horse collapsed and died while on site at an acute aortic rupture. As a result, the test was stopped and held a minute's silence. A few days later Lamaze spach about his sporting future:

"There are two possibilities: either I give up and leave the rest of my horses stall my colleagues. Or I fight ... We choose this sport because we love him. But we also opt for it because we love these animals. When riding, it is just not as if a golf or tennis racket breaks. We all have lost a family member. Hickstead has me means everything and changed my life. "

Career after 2011

In 2012, Lamaze was again nominated for the Olympic Games. In the Summer Games in London, he reached Derly Chin de Muze to 29th place in the individual competition and in the team standings to fifth place. Eric Lamaze is still the most internationally successful Canadian show jumping, even if it no longer ranks among the top ten riders in the world rankings.
