The Esiliiga is the second highest division in Estonian football.

A league season is based on the calendar year. It starts in April and ends in November.

Since 2005, the Esiliiga consists of ten teams. Some of these are the teams of the Second Meistriliigavereine. The season winner rises directly on the Meistriliiga. The runner-up was playing against second-bottom of a Meistriliiga Relegation with return game. The Second teams of Meistriliigavereine are not entitled to advancement. Finish the season on one of the top places so move according to the runners on the ascent or relegation place. The last three clubs in the Esiliiga descend into the II Liiga.
