European Athletics Championships

The European Athletics Championships are competitions which are conducted by the European Athletic Association, the European continental federation to determine champions in each track and field disciplines.

History

The European title competitions have been around much longer than the World Championships. From 1934 to 1966 she was always aligned with a war break 1942 " mid-term " one Olympics. After discrepancies in the years 1969 and 1971 sat from 1974 back through the four-year rhythm. From the European Championship 2012 in Helsinki is held every two years with a reduced program - without the competitions in walking and marathon - continued in the Olympic year with 42 instead of 47 disciplines.

Since 1934, the Women's World Games still the pinnacle of women's athletics, were the first European Athletics Championships were held only by men. 1938 competitions for men and women were carried out in two different locations and on different dates.

While already admitted from 1938 for the women's events were three participants per country ( except 1946: two instead of three ), were allowed to start in the men until 1958, only two participants.

Germany in 1946 and 1950 were not invited to the championships of the year. In 1954, the Federal Republic alone, the German team. 1958 and 1962 a joint German team athletes from the Federal Republic and the German Democratic Republic was formed in process of elimination. Thereafter, both German states took until 1990 with their own teams participate.

For the final battle each discipline until 1966 at least eight athletes were allowed in front part only six.
