Exile on Main St.

Occupation

Exile on Main St. is the tenth studio album released in the UK by the Rolling Stones, produced by Jimmy Miller. It was released on 12 May 1972.

Genesis

At the time of its appearance Exile on Main St. was attacked by many music critics, as they could not get used to the rather harsh, seemingly unfinished production style. In addition, it contains - unlike the previous albums - no pronounced hit songs. Only Tumbling Dice (5th place in the UK, # 7 in the U.S.) and Happy ( number 22 in the U.S.) appeared as single releases.

Today, the disk is considered one of the best releases of the band. It is less the individual pieces that make up the album, but rather the consistency of song quality and the continuous mood full of vigor and groove. Noteworthy is the mixed into the background voice of Mick Jagger. This itself, however, is not so convinced of the qualities of the double LP in retrospect; in a Rolling Stone interview from 1995, he estimates the two previous albums a higher.

The song Happy, sung by Keith Richards, was over time to its " Brand Song ", which is still in the concert program has its place. Rip This Joint also comes in a version sung by Keith Richards, was never published in this form. All Down The Line exists in two different versions: II ( U.S. single version ) Version I is on the LP / CD versions in Mono, version, however, mixed in stereo.

  • Entrance of Nellcote (2008)

In early 1971, the Stones had left England for tax reasons and settled in France. In the wet basement of Keith Richards for $ 2,400 a week rented villa Nellcote, Avenue Louise Bordes in Villefranche -sur -Mer on the Côte d' Azur, the songs were from March 1971 recorded ( during the occupation by the Nazis in World War II was the building used as Gestapo headquarters ). The power for the equipment was illegal, bled from a power line that ran through the villa park. As of October 1971 was determined against the Stones for drug trafficking, in December of the same year the allegations meant that Keith Richards was occupied by a travel ban to France. At this time the songs were only available as raw material, adding the overdubs and the final mastering took place until May 1972 in the Sunset Sound Recorders Studios in Los Angeles. The influence of Gram Parsons Torn and Frayed and Loving Cup originated entirely in Los Angeles.

However, some recordings extend into the 1969 return, such as Sweet Virginia, Loving Cup, Shine a Light ( 1969 ), All Down the Line or Tumbling Dice ( 1970). In part, the original images were used as a base (Sweet Virginia), other pieces such as Tumbling Dice ( 1970 arose as the Good Time Women for the album Sticky Fingers ) were re-recorded. The song Shine a Light was the title of the donor film Shine a Light Martin Scorsese on the Rolling Stones.

Like many of their other recordings, the Rolling Stones have been supported by numerous guest musicians: Ian Stewart, Dr. John, Billy Preston, Bill Plummer, Nicky Hopkins and others. For the gospel choir at Let It Loose The Rolling Stones, among others, dedicated Tammi Lynn and Shirley Goodman.

Exile on Main St. peaked in the UK and U.S. charts # 1 and remained on the charts for 16 or 17 weeks. In the list of the 500 best albums of the music magazine Rolling Stone, the album will be out in seventh place.

2007, a book by the American journalist Robert Greenfield was published, in which he describes the time of the emergence of the double album in the South of France. The Title: Exile on Main St. - A season in hell with the Rolling Stones ( German Edition: Exile on Main St. - A hellish summer with the Rolling Stones).

Universal, the new record label of the Rolling Stones, put on 14 May 2010, the double LP in a revised version before - as a double CD - and added ten more songs from the then recording sessions to including Pass the Wine or Plundered My Soul. Then, Exile on Main St. rose in many countries back into the charts and peaked in the UK and Norway Place 1

About the same time appeared the documentation Stones in Exile by Stephen Kijak, in addition to the Rolling Stones, the former band members Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman report in about the making of the album.
