FC Universitatea Cluj

Universitatea Cluj, short and U Cluj is a Romanian sports club from Cluj- Napoca. The football section of the club won in 1965, the Romanian football cup and enters since 2010 in the top division, the League 1, on. History

Universitatea Cluj was founded by students of the universities in Cluj in September 1919. The first president of the club was Professor Iuliu Haţieganu. In the first years U Cluj played mostly in regional competitions, before the club was in season 1932/33, founding member of the new Romanian professional league, the Divizia A. After the first initial successes ( runner-up in 1933, participation in the Cup final in 1934 ) the club fell in the league back more and more and had to stay in 1938 for the first time in Divizia B.

After the Second Vienna Award in 1940, the club had to switch to Sibiu, Cluj because from now on ( until 1947 ) was one of Hungary. After the Second World War, the club returned to his hometown.

1948 changed its name to U Cluj first in CSU Cluj, a year later in StiinTa Cluj on. From 1952 to 1959 StiinTa was trained by Ştefan Kovács, who was the first Romanian coach with Ajax Amsterdam training a top European club later. In the season 1964/65 StiinTa was his biggest club celebrating success, as the Romanian Cup was won. Subsequently, the team played with in the European Cup winners and reached the second round.

In 1966 is again a name change and the club took back to his old name Universitatea Cluj. In the 1971/72 season U Cluj achieved the best result in Divizia A by the club reached the third place. However, in the UEFA Cup the team was eliminated in the first round.

End of the 1990s followed the descent of the Divizia A in 1999 and then a further descent into Divizia C in 2000, the first time belonged to the club in the following season in their history. After only one year succeeded under coach Ioan Sabău, who began his football career in Cluj, the immediate resurgence. The fans of U Cluj are spread all over Romania, especially in Transylvania. One reason for the large following is the fact that in Cluj-Napoca, many universities are located: visit while studying the home games and are distributed after the conclusion of the whole country.
