Field hockey at the 1972 Summer Olympics

In the XX. 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich was held a competition in hockey (men). Since 1928, the hockey tournament was an integral part of the Olympic Games and ever since India had, and later won the gold medal Pakistan. In Munich, Germany was host for the first time another nation Olympic champion.

Tournament mode

As with previous games in Mexico City in 1968, the 16 participants each played in two groups A and B against each other. The First and Second of the groups contested the semi-finals and then played for the medals. The Third and Fourth of the groups played well from the places 5-8. Places 9-16 were determined without cross game in a direct comparison between the two Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth of the groups.

Qualifies were 10 participants in the first World Cup, which was held in 1971 in Barcelona, including was also the host of the Olympic Games Germany. The other six participants were determined by qualifying tournaments in Europe: Belgium, United Kingdom, Poland, Asia / Pacific: Malaysia, New Zealand, and America: Mexico.

After a goal by Michael Krause in the 60th minute through a penalty corner turned, the hosts won the final match before 000000000015000.000000000015.000 viewers with a 1-0 win over defending champions Pakistan.

In the final, played the German team with Peter Kraus ( Rüsselsheimer RK) - Michael Peter (HC Heidelberg) - Dieter Freise (HC Heidelberg ), Michael Krause ( Black - White Cologne), Edward Thelen ( Rot-Weiss Köln) - Horst Dröse (SC Frankfurt 1880), Carsten Keller ( C) ( Berlin HC) - Ulrich Klaes ( Rot-Weiss Köln ), Wolfgang Baumgart (SC Frankfurt 1880), Uli Vos ( Gladbach HTC ) and Peter Trump (TG Frankenthal).

An uproar, it came at the awards ceremony as the Pakistani players and their supporters insulted the German players and spectators and to the podium refused the German flag to show deference. As a consequence, the IOC closed the Pakistani players on period of the Olympic Games and international matches outside Pakistan. After President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had apologized to the German government, the team was pardoned in 1976.

Since the IOC had only 13 players awarded the gold medals used in the final, ordered Foreign Minister Walter Scheel on his account five Copies for the reserve players.
