Figure skating at the 1968 Winter Olympics

In the X. 1968 Olympic Games in Grenoble three competitions were held in figure skating. Venue was the " Stade de glace " (today's " Palais des sports" ). The ice rink had the standard size of 60 x 30 meters, in the hall were 12,000 spectators. For each participating country two women, men and couples were allowed to start. If a country had reached a place among the top 12 in the previous World Cup, there was a third place in the respective discipline.

As part of the closing ceremony was held as a demonstration rather than a competition in ice dancing, which is an Olympic event only since 1976. There was no valuation invited were the ten best pairs of the last World Cup.

The competition was attended by 28 skaters from 14 countries. Had to be shown a duty of five characters and a five- minute-long freestyle. For the Appreciation duty counted 60 percent, the freestyle 40 percent. The beginning of the freestyle was brought forward by 30 minutes short.

Emmerich Danzer, who had not lost a competition since 1966, was considered the favorite for the Olympic gold medal, but the fourth of five compulsory figures failed him and he fell back to fourth place. Best runners in the duty was Danzer's compatriot Wolfgang Schwarz, vice - world champion of the previous two years. This was followed by Tim Wood and Patrick Pera. Due to the high weighting of duty in the rating system changed in the freestyle at the four first positions nothing, although Danzer received by far the highest rating for his performance. The decisive factor was not the individual notes, but the place numbers: Five of the nine jury members sat Pera to third place. Wolfgang Schwarz was the first Olympic champion in the men's competition, who never became world champion.

Jan Hoffmann from the GDR was twelve years old the youngest male competitor in the history of the Olympic Games.

It took 31 skaters from 15 countries participated in this competition. The duty of these five figures had to show, followed by a four-minute freestyle. As for men, the duty counted 60 percent for the general classification, the freestyle 40 percent.

After compulsory Peggy Fleming was already unassailable lead at the top, before Gabriele Seyferth, Beatrix Schuba and Hana Mašková. Even in the final freestyle Fleming showed the best performance. Seyferth remained in second place, while Mašková pushed forward to the third place. Schuba fell back to fifth place.

The rating scheme of the pair running on the 18 couples participated from nine countries, differed significantly from that of the individual competitions. The newly introduced short program scored 25 percent for the general classification, where the number of slides to show elements was limited to six. The free program counted 75 percent and lasted five minutes. In the freestyle changed on the first four positions nothing.
