Flöthe

Flöthe is a municipality of the velvet municipality Oderwald ( based in Börßum ) in the district of Wolfenbüttel, in Lower Saxony.

Geography

Flöthe is located a few kilometers east- southeast of the independent city Salzgitter west of the Oder between Schladen Forest in the south and Wolfenbüttel in the north.

The two districts of the municipality are:

  • Great Flöthe
  • Small Flöthe

History

For the first time the church was mentioned in records as Flathi in 1170.

Incorporations

On March 1, 1974, the United Flöthe communities and small Flöthe were incorporated into the new municipality Flöthe.

Explanation of the name

Old names of the place are Flotide 780-802, 1013 Flathi, 1142 Flatide, 1187 Flothethe, 1189 and 1194 Vlothe Flotethe. You're most likely a reference to a watercourse or flowing water. This would take on the coming out of the forest streams or reference the name.
