After more than one season with the Rebels, as the club is called in England, McCleary moved in January 2007 to FC Bromley, whom he helped to promotion to the Conference South.

Nottingham Forest

End of January 2008 he signed his first professional contract with Nottingham Forest and reached in his first season with the Reds move up to the Football League Championship. McCleary is used for Forest as a winger and as an attacker, but he proved to be not yet in professional football so accurately, which is why he prefers acting on the outer positions in midfield. In July 2009, he agreed with the club from Nottingham to an early contract extension, the validity of which runs until 2012. In the Football League Championship 2009/10 McCleary received (24 games) regular forces in Forest, due to greater competition, however, he was able to earn a regular place. Also in the 2010/11 season he was a reserve player (18 games / 2 goals) and missed with his team again until the play-off semi-final promotion to the Premier League.

After Steve Cotterill had replaced his predecessor Steve McClaren on the coaching position during the first half of the 2011/12 season, became McCleary team regular. On 20 March 2012, he scored a 7-3 away win over Leeds United four goals. Shortly thereafter, he received the award for player of the month March 2012.
