The Garonne [ gaʁɔn ] (Latin: Garumna or Garunna, Aranese / Catalan: Garona ) is a river in south-west France. They delineated in ancient Aquitaine from the rest of Gaul, and forms the northern boundary of the historic landscape Gascony.

The 647 km long river rises in the Val d' Aran, in the Catalan Pyrenees, crossed after a few kilometers, the border with France and flows through Toulouse to Bordeaux, where it joins the Dordogne Gironde and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The name derives from the Celtic tribe of the Garumner.

Shipping

The Garonne is navigable from its mouth to the Pont de Pierre in Bordeaux for seagoing vessels, for the clear height of 53 meters, the Pont d' Aquitaine and the 2.8 km upstream lift bridge Pont Jacques Chaban -Delmas is sufficient. Then the arc height of the Pont de Pierre and the respective water level of the Garonne limited navigation on inland waterway vessels, as the Péniches that can run on the Garonne to Langon or to the place Castets -en- Dorthe. Because the cruise upriver earlier was further always dependent on the changing water levels, the Garonne Lateral Canal was built, the way to Toulouse in parallel to the river and there is continued to the Mediterranean in the Canal du Midi. He is, however, now used almost exclusively for tourism purposes.

Between the towns of Saint -Léger ( on the left bank ) and Nicole ( on the right bank ) may in appropriate water level the Garonne are also used by ships intending to reach the river Lot or come from this.
