George A. Jenks

George Augustus Jenks ( born March 25, 1836 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, † February 10, 1908 in Brookville, Pennsylvania) was an American lawyer and politician (Democratic Party), who served from 1886 to 1889 as United States Solicitor General.

George Jenks made ​​in 1858 graduated at Jefferson College in Canonsburg. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar and began to practice as a lawyer before he struck a political career in Brookville. From 1875 to 1877 he was a representative of the 25th Congressional District of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives. During this time he chaired the committee on disability benefits and was involved in the successful impeachment of Secretary of War William W. Belknap.

After his time in Congress to Jenks initially focused back on his legal activities. His candidacy for a seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court suggested in 1880 but failed. From 1885 to 1886 he was deputy Secretary of the Interior, before in 1886 he took over the office of the Solicitor General. He remained supreme Agent of the Federal government to court until 1889. Thereafter candidates failed as governor of Pennsylvania in 1898 and as a U.S. Senator in the following year.
